Ye Olde King's Head in Santa Monica has been around since 1974, so they have to be doing something right. This place is my go-to for weekend brunch or a post-gym carb binge. The menu has lots of traditional English fare with a few California twists (like the farmers market salad). The fish n chips are great as well as the sausage rolls, shepherds pie, etc. But my favorite thing to order is the Queen sized breakfast which comes with 2 eggs, toast, bacon, English sausage aka "banger," English style baked beans, and grilled tomatoes. Oh, and obviously we order a basket of "chips" for an appetizer. We just worked out, don't judge!
But since I am not eating meat (Lenten sacrifice) today I ordered the vegetarian breakfast. It comes with 2 eggs, toast, English style baked beans, grilled mushrooms, 2 veggie patties, and grilled tomatoes. I'm not a huge fan of mushrooms so those go immediately on Chris's plate. But the rest: Eggs over easy are solid, baked beans are delicious in a kind of tomato sauce, veggie patties are good, but even better when smothered in the English "brown sauce" called HP sauce, and grilled tomatoes are possibly my favorite part of the meal.
I've been doing this since I was a kid and I strongly believe that this is the best and only way to eat eggs/toast: use one piece of wheat toast and spread butter over it, then top with over-easy eggs and break the yolk on top of the toast. Be sure to sprinkle eggs with a little salt and pepper on each side. It sounds simple, but try it. You're welcome.
